About the Job
This is effectively a founding AI engineer seat. Portless is adopting AI across the company, but usage today is mostly basic (decks, spreadsheets, summarizing calls) with a few people vibe-coding their own dashboards - there are no real end-to-end agentic workflows yet. This person builds the AI infrastructure: shipping high-impact agentic workflows themselves, and - just as importantly - building reusable "Lego blocks" (APIs, MCP tools, documentation) so any team can build their own. It's a cross-functional, high-leverage role touching every team and working directly with leadership.
Responsibilities
- Build end-to-end agentic workflows that automate real operational work across the company.
- Build the platform/building blocks (APIs, MCP tooling, docs) so non-specialist teammates can assemble their own workflows.
- Partner cross-functionally to find the highest-leverage automation opportunities and ship them end to end.
- Example first project: an agent for inbound invoice questions - understands the question, pulls the right (complex) invoice, drafts a context-aware reply for a teammate to click-send - turning an hour of work into ~30 seconds.
- Integrate LLM APIs (Anthropic, OpenAI, etc.) reliably and securely; maintain observability over deployed systems
Minimum Qualifications
- 3+ years software engineering, with 1-2+ years building production AI systems.
- Has built 10+ real agentic/LLM workflows end to end.
- Platform mindset - has built tools/infrastructure for OTHERS to build on (APIs, MCP, strong documentation), not just for themselves (this part need not be AI-specific).
- Strong in Python and/or TypeScript; comfortable across backend and lightweight frontend.
- Relevant sector context - e-commerce, 3PL, logistics, or comparable B2B (target-company background matters; see Ideal Background)
Preferred Requirement
- RAG pipelines, vector DBs, agent orchestration / multi-step tool-use, evals frameworks.
- Power user of modern AI dev tools (Cursor, Copilot, Claude Code)
